Women and Children

One of the myths many women believe is that their men are more likely to die of a cardiovascular disease then they are. The truth is:

  • Cardiovascular disease is a man's disease.
  • Cardiovascular disease is a woman's disease.
  • Cardiovascular disease is a children's disease.

In fact, in terms of total deaths, in every year since 1984, cardiovascular disease (CVD) has claimed the lives of more females than males. And the gap between male and female deaths is wide. The really harsh fact is that cardiovascular diseases are the No. 1 killer of both women and men. These diseases cause about a death a minute among America females – claiming nearly half a million females lives every year. That’s more lives than the next 7 causes of death combined.

Another myth is that CVD is a disease of the elderly. While older people are at higher risk this myth overlooks the staggering number of young victims claimed by CVD. The truth is that CVD is the No. 3 cause of death for children under the age of 15. In the year 2001 about 197,000 cardiovascular procedures were performed on people age 15 or younger.

When it comes to cardiovascular disease, these myths can promote complacency. Complacency adds to each year’s death toll. Everyone whether man, woman or child needs to know that their cardiovascular system is strong and healthy. And if it isn’t, immediate steps need to be taken to return to a state of health.
